A Taste of Britain: Battenburg Cake

Battenburg cake is a type of cake eaten in the UK, which has a square shape divided into four pink and yellow squares, and is covered with marzipan. It is also spelled 'Battenberg', and Battenberg is the spelling which is, in fact, correct; the cake is named for the (originally German) family who made up part of the British royal family, and eventually renamed themselves Mountbatten in World War I to distance themselves from Germany. The origin of the name is not clear, but one theory claims that the cake was created in honour of the marriage in 1884 of Queen Victoria's granddaughter to Prince Louis of Battenberg, with each of the four squares representing each of the four Battenberg princes: Louis, Alexander, Henry and Francis Joseph.
