Let Them Eat Cake

The phrase Let Them Eat Cake is believed to have been said by Marie Antoniette just before the French Revolution, when told that the poor people were hungry because they had no bread.

Marie Antoniette (1755-1793) was the queen of France from 1774 to 1792 and the wife of Louis XVI. She became unpopular for her extravagant tastes and her lavish spending. She did not seem to care about the poor citizens of France. She and Louis XVI were put in prison during the French Revolution and were killed by having their heads cut off by the guillotine.
The phrase Marie Antoinette proudly exclaimed (Let Them Eat Cake) significantly contrasts with the one she uttered before she was executed by guillotine. When she accidentally stepped oh her executioner's foot, she humbly apologized by saying ""Pardon me Sir, I meant not to do it". Those were her last words.
